The Importance of Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs) in Homebuilding

Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs) are specialized circuit breakers that detect hidden problems that spark 82% of electrical fires. These products alert you to arcing faults that standard circuit breakers were not designed to detect.

Unfortunately, many homes do not have these, even though AFCIs could save nearly 1 billion in property damage annually. AFCIs have only recently been introduced to homebuilding, but not fast enough to become an industry standard. Slow building code updates and lack of awareness among homebuyers contribute to the slow process of AFCIs being installed in homes even though the added protection could save lives for a minimal cost (around 200$ total).

AFCIs are essential, and more than half of electrical fires are preventable by introducing arc-fault circuit interrupters on all 120-volt, single-phase, 15-20 A branch circuits supplying outlets or devices installed in residential homes.
